Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy derived from naturally-occurring sources that can be constantly replenished such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power. This contrasts with energy sources like oil and coal, which rely on burning a material which must be found extracted and is not recreated. Renewable energy is often associated with environmentally-friendly, or green energy, since it largely involves the use of clean natural resources, though certain types of renewable energy do produce pollution, and some even argue nuclear power is a renewable energy source. As the global demand for energy increases, renewable energy has become an increasingly important focus around the world, as relying on non renewable energy sources is an unsustainable practice in the long run.

Photovoltaics

Solar Energy
The term “photovoltaic” comes from Greek meaning “light”, and “voltaic”, meaning electric. The effect was first discovered in 1839 by A.E Becquerel.

Solar panels work wherever there is sunlight. They convert sunlight energy direct into electrical power without any conversion via another medium – making them effective and great for energy generation purposes. They can work in quite low level light conditions – consider a solar powered calculator – they work pretty much most of the time even in low light level conditions such as a dimly lit room. There is no threshold minimum intensity – such as that of other types of energy generation such as wind, and this makes them an ideal generation mechanism.

Typical efficiencies are of the order of around 20%. Efficiencies are rising all the time and differing materials and manufacturing techniques can yield higher and lower efficiencies. The efficiency of a PV cell is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp) – energy generated by the Photovoltaic cell in full sunlight.

You need a photovoltaics array, suitably aligned to capture as much of the suns rays as possible (pref south facing) and not overshadowed by buildings or trees. You need an inverter such that you actually use the power which converts the DC (direct current) generated from the PV cells into AC (alternating current) such that it can be used by household systems or fed into the grid.

This depends on the size of the installation. It could cost a few thousands and the actual amount depends on rebates – PV type used, installation costs and such like.

Solar Thermal

Thermomax
The Kingspan Thermomax Heat Pipe collector is the most efficient, longest lasting heat pipe type solar collector on the market today. Made in Europe since 1982, Thermomax has withstood the test of time. Each collector consists of a highly insulated manifold and a series of evacuated tubes. The vacuum inside each tube provides perfect insulation, protecting the system from outside influences, such as cold and windy weather or high humidity. The dry connection between manifold and tube means Thermomax heat pipe systems are perfect for commercial installations – the tubes can be inserted only when the building is complete and the system is ready to use.

Heat Pumps

Exhaust air heat pumps

Controlled domestic ventilation can be used in both low-energy and older houses. In low-energy houses the controlled ventilation system guarantees the required air exchange rate, even with the doors and windows closed. When older houses are renovated better thermal insulation could be used, along with fitting new windows to enable controlled domestic ventilation to achieve the necessary air exchange rate. These types of older building are often affected by street noise. A ventilation system would therefore be beneficial in these cases too. Controlled domestic ventilation with heat recovery When ventilation based on opening windows and controlled domestic ventilation without heat recovery are used, the energy from the inside air is not used. However the ventilation heat requirement accounts for a considerable part (40 – 50%) of the total heat requirement. In contrast to this, controlled domestic ventilation with heat recovery reuses the energy from the exhaust air. Not only that, the additional heat generated internally from lighting, people and domestic appliances is also utilised through heat recovery. Our FIGHTER exhaust air heat pumps facilitate heat recovery and supply the energy recovered from exhaust air for the domestic hot water and even the heating. Not only does energy recovery ensure a healthy and comfortable form of heating, it also produces savings with CO2 emissions. Ventilation, which means totally hygienic inside air, is a basic requirement for living in a healthy house. Controlled domestic ventilation with heat recovery reuses the energy from the exhaust air. Not only that, the additional heat generated internally from lighting, people and domestic appliances is also utilised through heat recovery
